SEPTEMBER 2007 - RESTORE BASIC DIGNITY

Even basic hygiene can become difficult and painful when suffering from arthritis,
but a new, free service can help restore dignity and independence.
Total Hygiene Ltd, the UK’s leading manufacturer of specialist toileting
solutions including the Clos-O-Mat brand-leading automatic shower toilet, has
developed a unique, mobile unit, to compliment the company’s established
consultation service.
Mark Sadler, Total Hygiene Sales Manager, elaborates, “Arthritis affects
9million people in the UK and ranges from swollen, painful joints through to
loss of strength, grip and movement. Even the mildest symptoms still make it
difficult to perform basic functions without help- simply getting on and off
the toilet, or holding of toilet paper and maintaining that pressure and control
whilst cleansing after toileting becomes difficult. We are a proud nation,
and it goes against our pride and dignity, and affects us psychologically,
to ask for help when toileting. But too often, people aren’t even aware
of the options available to help restore that pride, dignity and independence.
No two people are the same, even if they have the same condition, so it helps
to take advantage of expertise, and we have over 30 years’ experience.”
The mobile demonstration unit contains fully-operational key pieces of toileting
equipment enabling people to see for themselves- either at their own home or
a dedicated location such as their local Disabled Living Centre- the options
available, and the most appropriate for their individual needs, be it simple
grab rails through to automatic shower toilets which incorporate douching and
drying facilities eliminating the need to use toilet paper.
It includes the Clos-O-Mat Palma Vita, the first automatic shower toilet developed
specifically for the less able, which functions as a conventional toilet with
additional integrated douche and drying facilities which eliminate the need
to use lavatory paper. The Clos-O-Mat Palma is operated by a simple press of
the flush pad by hand, elbow or body pressure, or by a remote control hand
switch option. The washing and drying process can be triggered without the
handle having to remain depressed if required, making it easily useable by
all, regardless of manual dexterity. Adds Mark Sadler, “In Japan, a nation
known for its respect, even obsession, for cleanliness, automatic shower toilets
are perceived as aspirational ‘must have’ pieces of equipment!”
The Clos-O-Mat Lima Lifter is a height adjustable complete automatic shower
toilet suite, that in one compact unit incorporates toilet, douching and drying
facilities. The Lima Lifter looks just like a conventional WC, yet can be automatically
adjusted up and down to each user’s personal requirements for both comfort
during use and ease of getting on and off, up to a maximum seat height adjustment
of 730mm. The Lima Lifter incorporates drop-down arm supports, which can be
raised prior to the Lifter being actuated, or lowered with the Lifter.
As the Palma Vita, the Lima Lift incorporates integrated douching and drying
facilities, operated by hand, elbow or body pressure on the lever.
The toilets are complemented by the Aerolet range of toilet lifters, available
in the UK only through Total Hygiene. The lifters can be fitted over automatic
shower toilets or conventional WCs, to enable people with limited flexibility
to more easily get on and off the toilet, eliminating the need for help or
support.
The lifters fit compactly across the WC and replicate the natural motion of
standing up and sitting down, gently raising and lowering the user to position
them accurately over the toilet as required whilst enabling the feet to remain
in contact with the floor and maintaining the centre of gravity above the feet
for balance.
