What's New
JUNE 2008 - ENABLING DAILY LIVING
A new initiative to increase awareness and accessibility to independent living
aids has been recognised with a regional award for its sympathetic approach.
Rehability is the new concept from Veronica Downing Associates, a specialist Occupational Therapy organisation in Suffolk. Veronica has carefully managed the conversion of a 15th century thatched former threshing barn into a state-of-the-art yet relaxed independent living centre, a project which has now won a Country Landowners Association commendation for conversion of a redundant farm building into commercial use.
Rehability aims to give people a ‘real-life’ appreciation of the aids available by displaying working models in a bespoke domestic setting. The two-storey timber frame building, similar to many homes in the area, has been carefully designed to provide accessible general reception and meeting areas with a separate kitchen, lounge, bedroom and bathroom all equipped with fully-functioning independent living aids to demonstrate how particular fixtures and fittings can positively impact on a visitor’s life.
Veronica, a qualified Occupational Therapist (OT) herself with over 30 years’ experience,
explains, “I became aware that we all find it difficult sometimes when
seeing a product in a showroom to visualise it in our own home. It was therefore
essential when designing Rehability that we created an elegant but homely setting
to give that ‘real-life’ experience. All my associates are fully
qualified OTs and staff at Rehability work under the supervision of a qualified
OT so visitors can be fully assured of receiving expert, practical help and
guidance on matters across a breadth including physical disability, stress
management and children’s development.”
The kitchen is fully fitted and designed for wheelchair users, and includes low-level oven and hob, units with drop-down trays to aid accessibility and a wide range of handy kitchen gadgets. The living area features a range of aids to mobility and riser-recliners chairs. A working stairlift provides access to the first floor. The bedroom has a ceiling track hoist and and height adjustable profiling bed. The WC incorporates a powered lifting seat on our wheelchair accessible toilet. The wheelchair accessible bathroom demonstrates the fully operational Clos-o-Mat Palma Vita bidet toilet, a bath with powered bath lifter and leg raiser to make bathing easy even for those with severely limited mobility, bath lifters which can be fitted to existing standard baths, and a fully working wheelchair accessible level shower tray and enclosure.
Adds Veronica, “A lot of people don’t in the heart of hearts want to acknowledge they need help in daily life. By showing working models in a home setting, we are endeavouring to show that there is a huge range of options available that need not make a home look ‘institutional’ but that have a major impact on improving a person’s quality of life and independence.”
Rehability, in Chediston near Halesworth, is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9.30am- 1.00pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays by appointment, or via the website www.rehability.co.uk.
