JUNE 2008 - OPTIMISE HYGIENE POTENTIAL
The trend towards enabling people to remain in their own homes as long as
possible is highlighting a space problem: how to accommodate specialist bathing
and toileting equipment in a wetroom or small bathroom….
Total Hygiene, manufacturer of the top-selling Clos-o-Mat automatic WC, has taken steps to resolve the issue. Working with the Institute of Electrical Engineers, it has clarified regulations over positioning of electrical appliances within a bathroom or wetroom, particularly their proximity to a shower: providing the unit has a RCD, a Clos-o-Mat toilet can be installed within Zone 1 of a shower room or bathroom.
Total Hygiene explains, “Legislation states electrical appliances cannot be installed where there is entrapment of water, classed as Zone 0, ie a bath or shower tray. The query has mainly arisen because of the increasing creation of wetrooms, with no shower tray.
“The IEE actually says Zone 0 is ONLY the immediate area around the drain, and if a RCD is fitted, a Clos-o-Mat can be installed in Zone 1- adjacent to the bath or shower*! The clarification means the huge number of less able people who live in homes with small bathrooms, or who are unable to extend their homes to provide appropriate facilities, now have the option to include a Clos-o-Mat toilet adjacent to a shower or bath in their adaptation.
“When you consider that 1 in 6 people in the UK have a limiting long
term illness, an independent study shows that the number of wheelchair users
alone has increased 100% in a decade and that by 2020 over half the UK population
will be over 50, and facing problems of ageing such as reduced mobility, dexterity,
the need for social housing providers and local authorities to provide bathroom
adaptations is only going to increase. Many are already facing space issues,
adapting older property where bathrooms are small. This guidance will help
everyone.”
The Clos-o-Mat automatic WC combines conventional toileting with integral douching and drying facilities, saving the less able from the indignity of requiring assistance to cleanse after toileting. Looking like, and no bigger than a conventional toilet, the Clos-o-Mat is operated by simple hand or body pressure on the flush: one depression triggers the flushing, washing and drying cycle to ensure the user is effectively cleaned and dried without the need for toilet paper.
Clos-o-Mat was the first automatic toilet in the market and is now the UK’s biggest-selling such unit, being installed in locations ranging from individual’s homes to hospitals, hotels, nursing homes, shopping centres, tourist attractions and even on narrowboats. Total Hygiene provides a comprehensive sales, installation and after sales package, and offers a range of options to enable tailoring of each unit to individual requirements.
