AUGUST 2008 - IMPROVING PATIENT CARE AND STAFF WORKLOAD IN ONE…
Forward-thinking hospitals have discovered an efficient way of simultaneously
improving patient and staff hygiene control: installation of a Clos-o-Mat bidet
WC.
The automatic toilet, which combines conventional toileting with a douche and drier, eliminates hand:body contact by the individual using the toilet and/or carer- and thus the potential of contact with and transfer of germs via urine and faeces. It also disposes of the need for toilet paper, so giving an environmental benefit too.
Clos-o-Mats have already been installed in, among others, Sir Robert Peel Hospital in Tamworth, St Albans City Hospital and Upton Hospital in Slough, specificially on wards providing elderly or rehabilitation care, and in specialist departments such as neurological rehabilitation and endoscopy.
A spokesperson for the neurological rehabilitation units team throughout Hertfordshire, which includes St Albans City Hospital, observed, “When we set up the unit, we installed Clos-o-Mats in all the sites. They give our patients with physical disabilities independence and dignity when toileting. We specified the Clos-o-Mat with arm supports, which enables patients with sitting balance to toilet on their own, but we adjust patient care to individual requirements. The Clos-o-Mats have been in about eight years now, are serviced annually, and continue to provide a useful service for our patients.”
The Clos-O-Mat Palma Vita is easily operated by simple hand or body pressure on the flush pad. Unique ‘One Touch’ operation triggers the flushing, douching and drying processes; if necessary, an additional push at any time can repeat the drying cycle. The functions can be stopped at any time simply by standing up.
Water for douching is heated as required, saving energy, and is controlled to body temperature with a ‘fail safe’ cut-out. The douching process effectively cleanses and the dryer provides a gentle flow of warm air for up to 3 minutes. The douche arm retracts and self-cleans using the clean water supply to the Palma. It uses no chemicals, and therefore continues to sanitise the douche throughout the life of the unit, not just until the disinfectant reservoir empties.
Clos-o-Mat manufacturer Total Hygiene worked closely with award-winning commercial design house Goodwin Design to produce a range of optional extras that enable customisation of the toilet to individual requirements and complement the unit’s modern styling, including integrated fold down support arms, lateral body supports including specific paediatric options, a range of four plinths to enable the unit to be set at the appropriate height to aid wheelchair transfer, and a selection of seat options complemented by one specifically designed for children.
The Clos-o-Mat Palma is WRAS approved, enabling it to be connected to the UK water supply: the only complete, automatic shower toilet to have this certification.
Total Hygiene provides a comprehensive sales, installation and after sales package, and offers a range of options to enable tailoring of each unit to individual requirements.
