JANUARY 2009 - HELPING GIVE DIGNITY TO LIVING WITH OBESITY

The rise in obesity- and associated rise in Type 2 diabetes- continues to
make news with record levels of both being reported, but little features on
how to cope with day to day living with the issues- until now.
Total Hygiene, one of the UK’s leading healthcare equipment manufacturers
and suppliers, is addressing the dignity of sufferers through refinements and
additions to its range, which improve hygiene and privacy when undertaking
basic bodily functions such as toileting.
Robin Tuffley, Total Hygiene marketing manager, elaborates, “Latest figures
claim over 1/3 of the world’s population is overweight, and 10% obese. Obesity
is being blamed for a corresponding rise in Type 2 diabetes- in Britain, we
now have almost twice as many diabetic patients as a decade ago, with an estimated
2.1million sufferers.
“With obesity, inevitably it is harder to reach one’s ‘private parts’, and
a common symptom of Type 2 diabetes is increased urination. There is much focus
on how to address obesity, but little on how to live with it on a daily basis-
including coping with hygiene requirements.”
Total Hygiene’s latest addition is the bespoke Aerolet Bariatric lift, which
can accommodate someone up to 660lbs (300kg), supporting them effectively and
securely whilst they toilet.
The electronic lift unit is positioned over the toilet pan, and replicates
the natural motion of standing up and sitting down, safely lowering down to
just 39.5cm (15 ½”) and raising to 50cm (19 ½”) over the toilet as required
depending on user height and leg length, whilst enabling the feet to remain
in contact with the floor and maintaining the centre of gravity above the feet
for balance.

The Aerolet Bariatric compliments the core Aerolet Vertical and Aerolet Lift
which can accommodate up to 392lbs (180kg). All Aerolets can be used with a
conventional WC, or Total Hygiene’s unique Clos-o-Mat Palma bidet toilet, which
itself is rated to support weight up to 700lbs (315kg).
The only unit of its type developed specifically for the less able, the Clos-o-Mat
Palma combines traditional WC facilities with integrated douche and drier facilities:
after toileting, simple pressure of the flush pad simultaneously triggers the
douche arm to extend and wash the user with warm water, followed by a drying
cycle. The process eliminates the need to ‘wipe clean’, making it a hygienic
solution for those with limited/ restricted body movement.
Marc Gysling has had a Clos-o-Mat Palma installed for his brother Jody. Explained
Marc, “Jody is a hefty man but like all of us he likes a clean bum!. His size
meant it was difficult to reach certain areas of his body. The Clos-o-Mat automatically
washes and dries, so personal hygiene is maintained without having to contort
the body to use toilet paper.”
Clos-o-Mat bidet toilets have been made for over 30 years, with over 40,000
installed in the UK. Full details of the Clos-o-Mat bariatric solutions are
