MARCH 2009 - ENHANCING DIGNITY IN SOCIAL CARE

Dignity in Care Practice

Updates to the Social Care Insitute for Excellence’s Dignity in Care Practice Guide 09 are being answered by the Clos-o-Mat, the UK’s leading supplier of toileting aids.

The Practice Guide, which applies to all in the care sector- hospitals, residential, nursing, day centres and people’s own homes- highlights the difference factors such as hygiene, including toileting and continence needs, can make in retaining and enhancing dignity and self-respect. Specifically, the Guide requests the care sector to “enable people to maintain the maximum possible level of independence, choice and control”.

The Clos-o-Mat bidet toilet, manufactured and supplied by Total Hygiene, is proven in all care environments to make a positive contribution towards achieving that dignity in care.

The Clos-o-Mat looks like a conventional WC, but incorporates an integral douche and drier which eliminate the need to wipe clean after toileting. Thus people with reduced mobility or manual dexterity can toilet with less, or no, assistance, increasing privacy, dignity and self-esteem.

At Bonaer Nursing Home in Cornwall, a Dignity in Care grant was used to install a Clos-o-Mat. “The staff are very impressed, and the clients love it- even our most disabled! We’ve not had one complaint!” says Tony Metalle, owner of Bonaer.

Clos-o-Mats have also already been installed in hospitals across the country, specifically on wards providing elderly or rehabilitation care, and in specialist departments such as neurological rehabilitation and endoscopy.

A spokesperson for the neurological rehabilitation units team throughout Hertfordshire observed, “When we set up the unit, we installed Clos-o-Mats in all the sites. They give our patients with physical disabilities independence and dignity when toileting. We specified the Clos-o-Mat with arm supports, which enables patients with sitting balance to toilet on their own, but we adjust patient care to individual requirements. The Clos-o-Mats have been in about eight years now, are serviced annually, and continue to provide a useful service for our patients.”

Retired watchmaker James Randall has a Clos-o-Mat in his ‘smallest room’: “to me it’s the best bathroom in the world. It is brilliant!” says Mr Randall. He adds, “People talk about independence, but it’s much more than that. It’s about pride, self confidence, dignity and privacy. The equipment is very efficient and so easy to use. It has turned my life around, I couldn’t cope without it.”

The Clos-o-Mat Palma toilet- the only bidet toilet developed specifically for the less able- is just part of the Total Hygiene range, which includes both fixed-height and height adjustable toilets, toilet lifters, height adjustable washbasins and height adjustable changing tables. The company is the UK’s leading supplier of toileting aids for the disabled, with over 30,000 bidet toilets alone installed across the country to date.
