MARCH 2009 - TOTAL APPROACH TO STUDENT ACCOMMODATION NEEDS

Code of Practice for student housing Changes to legislation and the introduction of a Code of Practice for student housing are combining to prompt forward-thinking universities to take a total approach to meeting the needs of students with disabilities...

Total Hygiene, the UK’s top-selling manufacturer and supplier of toileting aids for the disabled, is reporting a significant increase in sales of its Clos-o-Mat Palma bidet toilet to universities and colleges- reflecting the 22% growth in both student numbers in the past decade, the predicted rise in student numbers to 1.5m+ by 2009 and corresponding need for student beds, plus the impact of the Universities UK Code of Practice for the Management of Student Housing, DDA and latest requirements of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (SENDA).

Robin Tuffley, Total Hygiene marketing manager, observes, “It is also a fundamental human right to be able to toilet with dignity and in privacy. SENDA requires the post-16 sector to provide aids and services for disabled students. The DDA further places a duty on universities to be proactive in incorporating disability into policy and practice and make reasonable adjustments to ensure the disabled are not placed at a disadvantage.

“It is an accepted fact that the quality of student accommodation is a major influencing factor in the choice of university. We are finding our Clos-o-Mat Palma toilet is increasingly being ordered by universities to enable them to meet those requirements cost-effectively, either by simple removal of an existing, conventional WC and its replacement with our unit, or the Palma being installed into a new-build ‘hall’, although they are also being installed in campus buildings. Because the Palma looks like a conventional WC, but has an integrated douche (wash) and drying facility, it removes a lot of the potential stigma traditionally associated with disability aids.”

Clos-o-Mat Palma bidet toilets are already installed at, among others, halls at University of Reading, Cardiff University and Bournemouth University, plus in campus buildings at Preston College and Hull College of Higher Education. Tracey Austin of Cardiff University, observed, “Whenever we have a student with disabilities, it is practice for them to meet with our team and discuss their individual needs. We installed the Clos-o-Mat Palma in one of our halls of residence this school year as a result of that process.”

The Clos-O-Mat Palma Vita is WRAS approved, so enabling it to be connected to the UK water supply: the only complete, automatic shower toilet that has this certification. It is the only bidet toilet on the market developed specifically for the disabled.

One simple press of the flush pad (by hand, elbow or body pressure) or the remote control hand switch flushes the toilet, then can trigger the washing and drying process, without the handle having to remain depressed, making it easily useable by all. If necessary, an additional push at any time can repeat the drying cycle. The functions can be stopped at any time simply by standing up.

As a result, the Clos-o-Mat Palma eliminates the need to use toilet paper, and thus hand/ body contact, while ensuring the user is still properly and hygienically cleaned. In the process, the risk of the WC becoming blocked by excessive toilet tissue is eliminated, reducing maintenance costs and issues.

Total Hygiene provides a comprehensive sales, installation and after sales package, and offers a range of options to enable tailoring of each unit to individual requirements. Its technical engineers can assess premises to establish the most appropriate requirements, ranging from simple support rails through height adjustable wash basins and changing tables to bidet toilets.
