APRIL 2009 - TOTAL COMMITMENT TO TRAVIS TREK
A total commitment to helping others embrace the challenges of life has led
to a unique outcome in more ways than one...
Blind Scott Cunningham, from Glasgow, and his guide dog Travis have completed
Travis Trek 5, the latest in a series of major treks round the country, to
simultaneously raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and inspire
others to embrace challenges. The latest trek, along the Highland Way, was
the first time a duo of guide dog and owner has trekked the length of the Way
north to south, and at the same time saw the honouring of a colleague of Scott’s-
Bill Blyth, who was tragically killed in a car accident in 2008...
To date, Scott has raised over £60,000 for GDBA, sufficient to fund the training
of nine puppies. Proceeds from Travis Trek 5 will go towards another puppy,
to be named after Bill, the Scotland regional sales manager for Clos-o-Mat/Total
Hygiene. And to help boost funds, Total Hygiene donated £500 to Travis Trek
5, presented by Bill’s widow Karen.
Garry Hastie, Total Hygiene’s service manager for Scotland and who was one
of many accompanying Scott and Travis on TravisTrek 5, explained, “Bill knew
Scott well, having originally met him when he lost his sight and we supplied
a Clos-o-Mat automatic toilet; the relationship has continued with my maintenance
of the unit. Bill had huge admiration for Scott’s determination, and would
be honoured that the proceeds from TravisTrek 5 will go towards training a
guide dog in his name.”
