AUGUST 2009 - HAVING A LIFT!

Aerolet toilet lift Daily life and personal hygiene have been given a lift for one Co Down couple, through innovative application of technology by Total Hygiene.

James Branigan, of Kilkeel, contracted MRSA after a heart operation, which has settled in his hip and made even light flexion/bending painful to the extent he could not sit properly, or unaided. As a consequence, even a basic daily function such as toileting meant he needed help from his wife Mary. The couple’s Occupational Therapist, Fiona McCourt based at the Newry Itec Centre, had heard about the Aerolet toilet lift supplied by Total Hygiene, and recommended an Aerolet Vertical Lift be installed at the couple’s home under a Disabled Facilities Grant.

“It’s made life so much easier!” says Mary Branigan. “My husband was having such difficulty sitting or getting up from the toilet, and needed me to help him. The Aerolet has made our lives a lot better, and given him his dignity and independence.”

The Aerolet toilet lift was supplied through The Care & Assist Company in Ballygowan, Co Down, and is available through Total Hygiene, the UK’s leading specialist manufacturer of toileting solutions for the elderly and disabled. The units fit compactly across any WC, and replicate the natural motion of standing up and sitting down, gently raising and lowering the user to position them accurately over the toilet as required whilst enabling the feet to remain in contact with the floor and maintaining the centre of gravity above the feet for balance. After toileting, the Lift can be raised by degrees to ease access for cleansing.

The Aerolet Tilt is primarily designed for people with balance issues, enabling them to simply lean against the seat and hold the integral arm supports to operate the unit, whilst the Vertical is more appropriate for those with limited or no flexion in the hips and knees. After toileting, the Lift can be raised by degrees to ease access for cleansing.

The Aerolet Lift can be adjusted to individual leg length and degree of body stability, to as low as 39.5cm(15 ½”), yet can accommodate weights up to 125kg (20 stone). The core Tilt and Vertical versions are complimented by models including the Standard (ST) which will fit most bathrooms and higher or hanging toilet bowls, the Small (SM) for smaller bathrooms, the Mobile (MO) which can be moved from one bathroom or WC to another making it ideal for hospitals nursing and care homes and leisure resorts, and the Clos-o-Mat, specifically designed to work with the Clos-o-Mat top-selling automatic ‘wash and dry’ toilet. All are rated to support up to 180kg (28 stone), but a bespoke bariatric version gives a maximum lift capacity of 330kg (51 stone). Whilst powered as standard by conventional 230v electrical supply, the Aerolet range can be supplied with a battery powered option where a suitable power point isn’t available.

Total Hygiene is the UK’s biggest-selling manufacturer of toileting aids; its brand-leading Clos-o-Mat automatic bidet toilet, which combines a douche and drier in a conventionally-styled WC unit, is now installed in over 30,000 locations nationwide, and is the only unit of its type with WRAS approval, enabling connection to the mains water supply. Uniquely, Total Hygiene offers a national design, installation and commissioning service, backed up with its own in-house team of dedicated service engineers.
