SEPTEMBER 2009 - LIFTING CARE STANDARDS

A high quality rated care home has further raised its standards through an
innovative approach to residents’ needs.
Brookfield House, in Nantwich, Cheshire, already carries a high two star Care
Quality Commission grading; now it has invested in an Aerolet toilet lifter,
to further enhance provision, simultaneously increasing independence for its
45 residents, and helping staff.
The Aerolet, available exclusively from Total Hygiene, replicates the natural
movement of standing and sitting, lowering and raising the user onto and off
the toilet whilst enabling them to keep their feet on the floor and maintain
their centre of gravity and therefore balance. An Aerolet Tilt has been fitted
over the standard WC in the communal area of Brookfield House, enabling its
less mobile residents to ‘go to the loo’ during the day and evening with reduced,
or even no, carer assistance.
“The residents think it’s great! They have taken to it very quickly and easily.
It’s nicer for them to be able to go to the toilet with more privacy and independence,
and it reduces lifting demands on staff,” explains home manager June Jones,
who was responsible for the decision to invest in the Aerolet. “We already
have a variety of living aids designed to optimize our residents’ independence;
the Aerolet reinforces our commitment to treat those in our care with respect
and uphold their right to privacy. In our mind the capital cost is more than
offset by the improved offering to residents and the relief of staff for other
duties.”
Total Hygiene supplies various options in the Aerolet, to optimize flexibility.
The unit is available in a choice of either Vertical or Tilt lifting; variations
include the Standard (ST) which will fit most bathrooms and higher or hanging
toilet bowls, the Small (SM) for smaller bathrooms, the Mobile (MO) which can
be moved from one bathroom or WC to another making it ideal for hospitals nursing
and care homes and leisure resorts, the Automatic which adjusts to differing
leg lengths, and the Non Contact. All are rated to support up to 180kg (28
stone), but a bespoke bariatric version gives a maximum lift capacity of 330kg
(51 stone). Whilst powered as standard by conventional 230v electrical supply,
the Aerolet range can be supplied with a battery powered option where a suitable
power point isn’t available.
The Aerolet lifter is just part of Total Hyiene’s comprehensive range of toileting
solutions for the elderly and disabled, including the renowned Clos-o-Mat ‘wash
and dry’ toilet which eliminates the need to ‘wipe clean’ with conventional
toilet tissue by douching and then drying the user at the press of the flush
lever. Full details are available at this
