SEPTEMBER 2009 - CHANGING PLACE CHANGES LIVES IN LIVERPOOL
Part of a £10m regeneration of a World Heritage Site is ‘raising the bar’
in provision in public toilets through a ‘total’ approach to accessibility.
Merseytravel, Merseyside’s public transport body, has an objective of being
a world class organisation, leading the field in its sector; the objective
is becoming a reality in part through the regeneration of the Pier Head Ferry
Terminal, part of the Merseyside integrated sustainable transport plan.
The new terminal creates a landmark building, with improved landing stage
and restaurant facilities, plus a new Beatles Story tourist attraction, and
includes best practice for access for the disabled through detail such as shop
layout, colour contrasts, door widths and an innovative ‘Changing Places Changing
Lives’ toilet facilities. The disabled public convenience as a result features
a hoist, changing table, shower, and Clos-o-Mat ‘wash and dry’ toilet and Aerolet
vertical toilet lift.
Merseytravel chief executive Neil Scales said, “Merseytravel in its drive
to be a world class organisation is fully committed to providing maximum flexibility
to meet our travellers’ needs and providing fully inclusive facilities are
far as possible. We aim to demonstrate the benefits of raising the bar in provision
of inclusive spaces, consulting with users and making informed decisions to
fulfil best practice. It was our view we should provide a state of the art
toilet facility for our customers, to meet as many needs as possible, particularly
as research shows people will make a decision NOT to go somewhere if they feel
they cannot find and use a safe, clean toilet.”
Merseytravel’s Brian Kerr added, “A group from the Disabled Persons Transport
Advisory Committee has already visited Pier Head and I understand they were
very impressed with what they saw.”
The Clos-o-Mat ‘wash and dry’ toilet is the only unit of its kind manufactured
in the UK- by Total Hygiene. The unit looks like a conventional WC, but includes
an integral douche and drier, which eliminates the need to use toilet tissue
to cleanse after toileting- a major issue for people with issues affecting
manual dexterity, balance and mobility. The Aerolet vertical toilet lift, also
supplied by Total Hygiene, replicates the natural motion of standing up and
sitting down, gently raising and lowering the user to position them accurately
over the toilet as required whilst enabling their feet to remain in contact
with the floor and maintaining the centre of gravity above the feet for balance.
The Clos-o-Mat and Aerolet are core elements of Total Hygiene’s offering,
which includes accessories to enable personalisation of the Clos-o-Mat to individual
needs, be it a child or adult, plus a range of height adjustable equipment
such as basins and changing tables, to create bathrooms and washrooms that
optimise inclusivity. Total Hygiene is unique in offering
a comprehensive, nationwide in-house installation, commissioning and service
programme.
The Clos-o-Mat is the only unit of its type to carry WRAS approval enabling
connection to the mains water supply. It is also the UK’s leading ‘wash and
dry’ toilet, with over 30,000 now installed in locations as diverse as individual
homes through shopping centres, hotels and hospitals to even a tall ship!
