NOVEMBER 2009 - TOTAL SOLUTION TO HELPING MEET TOILETING CODE OF PRACTICE IN SCHOOL BUILD PROGRAMME

An innovative approach to ensure the needs of disabled pupils are met even
down to basic personal hygiene is being pioneered in Ireland by Total Hygiene.
The company, already one of Europe’s leading suppliers of toileting solutions
for the disabled, has developed its offering to enable architects and builders
to meet the criteria laid down in the Department of Education & Science’s
general design guidelines for its current school building programme: over €600m
is being spent in the current financial year on school upgrading, with 170
projects currently at architectural planning stage*.
Under the guidelines, the schools should be designed to provide universal
access for all, to the detail of a typical primary school will include 8 classrooms
with en-suite toilet, and a universal access sanitary suite including shower
provided at ground floor level, with at least one universal access WC at each
floor level.
Total Hygiene maintains its innovative Clos-o-Mat Palma wash and dry toilet-
the only one of its kind purpose-designed for disabled people- is the only
truly universal toilet on the market. A conventional WC with support grab rails
still does not enable people- including pupils- with any manual limitation
to toilet unaided, whilst the Clos-o-Mat’s integral douche and drier wash and
then dry the user without the need to manually cleanse with toilet tissue.
For multi-user environments, such as schools, the Clos-o-Mat Lima Lift incorporates
the benefits of the Palma with full height adjustability.
Total Hygiene compliments the Clos-o-Mat with a range of accessories, including
paediatric supports specifically for the unit, and its Aerolet toilet lifters
which replicate the natural motion of sitting down and standing up, automatically
and smoothly lowering the user over and onto the toilet and then raising them
to standing whilst ensuring their centre of gravity and thus balance remains
stable. A range of shower seats is also available from the company.
Bournside School in England is just one establishment appreciating the benefits
of applying Total Hygiene’s approach. The school, which has 1800 pupils aged
between 11 and 18, was keen to ensure all students, regardless of ability,
were offered equal opportunity to develop and be independent. Part of Bournside’s
solution has been the installation of a toileting suite for disabled pupils,
aimed to optimise their independence, comprising hinged arm supports, shower
chair, and a Clos-O-Mat automatic shower toilet.
School site manager Robert Farrow observed, “As a school, we aim to be inclusive
and give all our students, regardless of ability, every tool to achieve their
full potential and help them achieve personal growth to prepare them for adult
life. The Clos-O-Mat has been installed for a while now, giving us time to
assess its impact. It has helped the children be as independent as possible.
They have found it easy to use, and we have had no complaints.”
Total Hygiene has in-house design and technical teams,
enabling specifiers to produce a sanitary suite that complies with all legal,
regulatory and budgetary requirements, and is as inclusive as possible. The
company has undertaken over 40,000 installations in the UK alone- some of which
are still in regular daily use 30 years after they were first fitted- with
growing numbers in Ireland.
