FEBRUARY 2010 - TRAILBAZING- THROUGH TO THE TOILETS!

The UK’s leading exhibition venue, The NEC Birmingham, is taking its facilities
into the future- right through to its toilets!
As part of a £40m investment programme to upgrade facilities in line with
the Group’s corporate mission to be trailblazing, the venue has had a Clos-o-Mat
Palma Vita ‘wash and dry’ toilet installed in the Atrium- home of, among others,
the Naidex exhibition for the national homecare, rehabilitation & disability
market. The installation enhances the Group’s championing of access for disabled
people, and means there are now 11 accessible/ disabled toilets in the Atrium
area alone!
NEC Project Engineer Andy Mullan, responsible for the Clos-o-Mat installation
and one of the NEC’s dedicated ‘DDA champions’, elaborated, “The investment
programme has seen numerous improvements for every one of the 2.1million visitors
we welcome each year to The NEC, including disabled people. We have dropped
kerbs, added skylifts and ramps, and now installed a Clos-o-Mat.
“We have always had disabled toilets, providing facilities in line with the
requirements of Approved Document M of the Building Regulations; we have an
ethos to be trailblazing, and the Clos-o-Mat gives added benefits of accessibility
over established accessible toileting.”
The Clos-o-Mat Palma Vita looks like a conventional WC but features in-built
douche and drier, eliminating the need for users to wipe clean with toilet
tissue. Pressure on the flush pad simultaneously triggers the flushing and
douching process, following by gentle warm air drying. The unit was the first
of its kind developed specifically for disabled people, and is the only one
to have WRAS approval enabling connection to the mains water supply.
Since the Clos-o-Mat concept was developed, over 30,000 units have been installed
throughout the UK, with some of the original toilets still being in regular
use today- more than 30 years after they were first installed! The Palma Vita
is the latest incarnation, developed in conjunction with leading commercial
designer David Goodwin, who conceived the Parker pen; as a result, it is contemporary-styled,
enabling seamless blending with even the most stylish décor. Unlike other ‘wash
and dry’ toilets, the Clos-o-Mat is manufactured in the UK, and supported with
national in-house after-sales, commissioning, servicing and maintenance; it
also features a range of accessories, also designed by David Goodwin, to enable
tailoring to precise individual needs.
