MARCH 2010 - TOTAL APPROACH TO INCREASE BUSINESS
The British tourism industry is missing an opportunity to take a larger share
of the £1billion spent in the UK by domestic visitors alone, and potentially
breaching latest Code of Practice claims Total Hygiene. And its claims are
reinforced by latest data from VisitEngland….
Figures released by VisitEngland show overnight trips made by, or accompanied
by, someone with a health impairment or condition accounted for almost £1billion
in the first six months of 2009, and people with access needs account for 12%
of all overnight domestic trips. The figures come after the BS8300 code of
practice for inclusive building design was updated to recommend multi-occupancy
new build or refurbishment- including hotels- provide up to 15% of bedrooms
as accessible. The minimal investment required to accommodate impaired visitors
can be offset for tax relief either as a revenue expense or capital allowance.
Total Hygiene is already the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of disabled
toileting aids. Its new complete bathroom package extends beyond disabled toileting,
into creating a bathroom/ en-suite/ washroom that meets the need of both able
and disabled in one, including height adjustable basins, ‘wash and dry’ toilets
and hoists.
Robin Tuffley, Total Hygiene marketing manager, comments, “There are over
10m people registered disabled in the UK. Everyone, able or disabled, has to
go to the toilet, and we ‘go’ up to eight times a day! Research also shows
that people- regardless of ability- make a conscious decision NOT to visit
somewhere if they believe they cannot toilet in clean, hygienic, and safe circumstances.
“A well-designed accessible bathroom, en-suite or washroom opens a venue’s
doors to that largely uncatered- for section of the population, a section that
is growing as we live longer. Tourism for All has numerous case studies ranging
from independent operators to international chains that have seen a significant
increase in business such as occupancy levels almost double by making even
small adjustments to accommodate disabled guests.
Maybe more operators should spend a day in a wheelchair, or with one arm, and
go round their venue, to see it from a different perspective!”
Total Hygiene is the only UK supplier to offer the breadth of design, supply,
installation and maintenance across its disabled toileting aids. Its expertise
gained from over 40 years in the sector means it is ideally positioned to advise
on, and ensure the design complies with, all legislative requirements and considerations,
including Building Regulation Document M and BS8300:2009. Full details are
