British Standards now require that creating a good learning environment extends beyond the classroom and into the toilets.
BS8300: 2009 Accessible Building Design specifically states that educational establishments undertaking any new-build or refurbishment programme should, as good practice, now provide a 'Changing places' facility. The room goes beyond a 'Document M' disabled toilet, providing minimum space criteria to enable use by a disabled person and up to two carers, plus support equipment including a height adjustable changing bench, privacy screen, X/Y ceiling hoist and support rails.
Total Hygiene, the UK's leading manufacturer of disabled toileting solutions, complementing its unique position as sole official commercial partner of the 'Changing Places Changing Lives campaign' which devised the concept of a 'Changing places' facility, has developed an innovative package for LEAs and Academy Trusts, designed to help them ensure compliance with the Standard's good practice.
Robin Tuffley, Total Hygiene marketing manager, elaborates, "We all go the toilet up to eight times a day. - a criteria of which many are not aware. And many specifiers are themselves unsure of what such a facility involves, because it is a new evolution.
"We were chosen by the Campaign to work with in partnership with them because of our unique ability to help in all areas as required, from initial design and specification through to installation, and crucially, maintenance."
Harrow College is one of the first educational establishments in the country to install a 'Changing places' facility, locating it alongside the student refectory. Ian Kavanagh, facilities manager at the College, explained, "Our Occupational Therapist asked for a package of facilities to support current students- primarily a Clos-o-Mat 'wash and dry' toilet, adjustable table and hoist. We researched for the best advice and guidance to meet that requirement, and as a result developed a partnership for the project with Total Hygiene. The company helped us create the most accessible facility possible within budget, that went beyond immediate needs and will provide the flexibility to accommodate most students' requirements for the foreseeable future, so delivering 'best practice'."
