JANUARY 2012 - CHANGE TO ATTRACT VISITORS
Latest figures show that visitors with disabilities account for a market worth £2billion to English tourism. Simultaneously, the Changing Places Consortium, which lobbies for fully accessible toilets reports an acceleration in the number of attractions installing its specification of toilet.
Under latest British Standards (BS8300:2009 design of buildings & their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people, and BS6465-4 2010 code of practice for the provision of public toilets) it is now 'good practice' to install a Changing Places toilet in buildings to which large numbers of the public have access.
In the last four months alone, over 50 Changing Places toilets- which cater for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) and other people with severe disabilities who need the support of at least one carer - have been opened at venues across the country, bringing the total to over 300, with one of the latest being at Marwell Wildlife.
Beverley Dawkins, co-chair of the Consortium says, "Families and carers of someone with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) and other people with severe disabilities who need the support of at least one carer will often avoid visiting public places if they know there are not appropriate facilities for them to spend the whole day out. VisitEngland maintains that when visitors with severe disabilities visit a tourist attraction, they will often stay a length of time. It is therefore important the needs of all visitors are accommodated. The speed at which Changing Places toilets have grown throughout the UK shows there is not just a need, but a demand, for fully accessible toilets in public places."
Robin Tuffley, marketing manager at Total Hygiene, which sponsors the Changing Places campaign, adds, "The average person visits the toilet eight times a day, so it is actually a serious consideration in designing or upgrading any new attraction."
Total Hygiene (www.clos-o-mat.com) is the UK's biggest and longest-established supplier of disabled toileting solutions, from simple grab rails through the Clos-o-Mat 'wash and dry' toilet which eliminates the need for manual cleansing by toileter or carer, to complete Changing Places toilets. The provision of equipment is complimented by in-house design, supply, installation and service & maintenance packages.
