Changing Places Changing Lives
The Changing Places campaign is probably the most important initiative in the disability access field for the last 20 years. It provides anyone who needs the help of a carer to go to the toilet to be able to go ‘out and about’, knowing they can use appropriate facilities. Changing Places are “desirable” under current legislation (Building Regulations Approved Document M 2013, BS8300:2009), in all building to which numbers of the public have access. Under the Equality Act (which replaced the DDA), service providers are required to make “reasonable’ adjustments- including to the built environment’- where a disabled person would otherwise be at a ‘substantial’ disadvantage…and those adjustments should be made before a need arises.
What is a Changing Places toilet facility?
The facilities promoted by Changing Places provide more space (minimum of 12sqm) than a normal accessible toilet so that there is adequate room for all the extra equipment such facilities require and room for two carers to easily help the user.
